| BLACK MEN AT HIGHER RISK FOR PROSTATE CANCER…
According to the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service,
African American men are not only at high risk for developing prostate
cancer compared to their white and Asian counterparts, but their five-year
survival rates are lower, too.
Consider these facts:
-
There are more cases of prostate cancer among African American men (209
cases in 100,000 – 1991 data) than among white men (159 cases per 100,000).
In fact, according to the NCI, African American men may have the highest
incidence of prostate cancer in the world. Black men in America are
at least 50 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer than men of
any other racial or ethnic group in this country. Conversely, some
of the lowest incidence rates of prostate cancer are found among black
men in certain regions of Africa.
-
Roughly 66 percent of Black men diagnosed with prostate cancer survive
at least five years compared to 81 percent of white men with the disease.
This may be due, in part, to the fact that Black men tend to be diagnosed
at later stages, after the cancer has grown.Mortality rates among Black
prostate cancer victims is twice as high as that for white men, and this
rate is increasing almost two percent a year – compared to a one percent
annual increase for white men.
-
The causes for this disparity are unknown. Even when education and
income factors are equal, the incidence of prostate cancer is still higher
for Black men in America.
-
Studies are ongoing in three different areas of the country to investigate
the causes that will examine impacts of things like diet, lifestyle and
environmental exposures, along with hormonal and genetic differences.
