The Genetics of Prostate
Cancer:
Opportunity to Help Prostate
Cancer Research

Dr. William Catalona and his research staff are conducting a detailed
investigation of individuals with a strong family history of prostate cancer.
They welcome the participation of men who could assist in this research.
The criteria for someone to join this study, "The Genetics of Prostate
Cancer," is that he have two or more men in his family affected with prostate
cancer. These family members can include himself, a father, a brother,
cousin, uncle, grandfather, nephew of son.
Studying families with two or more affected men will provide some genetic
insight into the cause of prostate cancer.
The focus of the study is to identify a gene that is passed from one
generation to the next and is responsible for prostate cancer.
Two goals of this research to better understand prostate cancer are
finding additional ways to detect prostate cancer, in genetically susceptible
individuals, in its early stages and discovering new treatments.
Participants will be asked to fill out a family history questionnaire,
which includes the names of other male family members who would like to
join the study.
Part of the research involves obtaining blood samples from family members
who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and also those who are unaffected.
The research study will pay for any charges associated with obtaining the
blood samples.
All information obtained during the study will be help in strict confidence.
